Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

5 Ave B
Fort Smith, MT 59035
(406) 666-2412

Description:

Featuring a large lake created by a man-made dam that blocks the waters of the Bighorn River, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a popular camping and fishing site, though it offers far more than just that. The lake and river are virtually brimming with fish, with trout the most numerous species but with many other species for fishermen to go for as well. Don't make fishing the only reason to get out on the water: the canyon that borders the lake is a truly spectacular sight for both nature lovers and wildlife spotters. Hiking trails are located all around the park, though not all are connected making them best suited for short day trips. Numerous campgrounds offer everything from easily accessible RV areas to boat-in-only sites, making a night at the park a great experience for all. Located in both Montana and Wyoming, almost due south of Billings, the massive park is quite popular but has plenty of space to make a trip truly relaxing and enjoyable.
